Journal entry, from the first winter of my marriage and the first winter of our rule
Winter’s grip remains fierce, our city’s elves suffer more every day, and all I can do is take deep breaths, keep trying, and believe.
I believe that we will find a way to stop our elves from being systematically poisoned by the plants that are keeping the rest of our people alive.
I believe that we will remain vigilant and alive.
I believe in our people, and their inherent generosity- how nobles have given up their homes, how clerics labor every day to provide untainted water, how the wild men fight through the snow every day to bring in elk, how a Dynast elf with little reason to love or care for our people risks her life researching medicines that could kill her, but will save thousands.
I believe that when Artemis wraps his arms tightly around me, and I wrap mine around him, we burn with a fire pure and bright enough to defy the falling shadows. I believe that I am safe here. I believe in us.
I believe that we will make an heir.
I believe that we will defeat the invaders.
I believe that my ancestress, the Queen Adrianna Archaedes, is watching over me, and I believe that she approves.
I believe that Archaedia will be whole again.
And when the Enemy comes, I believe one thing: we will be ready.
